  • Travel around St. Croix is best done independently, with pay-per-ride options limited.

  • As a territory of United States, St. Croix does not require a passport and travel is much easier.

  • St Croix has a lot of activity options and a private home is an excellent base and center for relaxation.

  • Full-service resorts do exist, and that may be your better plan if you need room service or are uncomfortable making your own drinks.

Essential St. Croix Travel FAQs

  • No, U.S. citizens are not required to present a passport for entry to St. Croix, as it is an unincorporated territory of the United States. A government-issued photo ID (like a driver's license) is sufficient for air travel. More specifically, there is nobody to present any documents to upon arrival, as entry to St. Croix is a 2-minute unrestricted walk to the airport exit.

When you depart, you will need to prove citizenship and a driver’s license is standard with a passport potentially speeding the process along. Once through that screening, you will need to collect your checked luggage and proceed to an agricultural screening and then drop off your checked luggage again. Then it’s TSA, with pre-check if you have it, and then to the departure gate area.

US Citizens can transport up to $1,600 of duty-free merchandise every 30 days from St. Croix to the mainland.

  • The official currency is the U.S. Dollar (USD), and the official language is English. Crucian dialect is commonly spoken by locals, but standard English is used in all commerce and services.

Most businesses accept credit/debit cards, sometimes for an additional cost. Some smaller businesses and private sellers may only accept cash. Internet access and power are required for credit card processing, and there are times when one of these elements is not working. When this happens, cash is the only solution, and you should plan for those situations.

  • The ideal time to visit is from April to June. This period offers warm, less humid weather, fewer crowds following the peak winter season, and precedes the most active months of the Atlantic hurricane season.

St. Croix features mild, consistent year-round weather.

    • Temperature: Winter high temperatures average 82 degrees and summer averages 86 degrees. Low temperatures each night are about 10 degrees cooler. (Source: NOAA)

    • Rainfall: The first half of the year (January–June) is drier, averaging less than 3 inches of rain monthly. The second half of the year (July–December) is wetter, averaging over 5 inches monthly.

    • Geographic Variation: The northwest mountains (home to a lush, forest area) are wetter, while the east end is drier and features desert-like vegetation and cacti.

    • Expectation: Passing showers are common almost daily, but all-day rain is rare.

  • Most hotels and private homes use cisterns to collect and filter rainwater. While often safe throughout the island, it is generally recommended that visitors drink bottled water or check with each provider to confirm purification methods.

Like most properties, Turtle Bluff filters and sanitizes that water and has a secondary filter system specifically for drinking water to improve taste.

  • For travel during the peak season (December to March) or for large private villas, it is highly recommended to book 6 to 12 months in advance. For off-peak travel, 3-4 months is typically sufficient.
